The Magic of Art Workshops: Creating and Connecting
The way I teach my art workshops is more than just showing people how to make a one off piece of art; it’s about creating a space where they can be supported to re-connect with their creative selves in a way that will continue into the future. This became clearer than ever to me during my Bird Collage Workshop, which mirrors the process I use in my own art.
The Bird Collage Workshop Experience
In this workshop, we spend hours creating textures and turning them into bird collages. There’s something very special about a room full of adults playing with paint for hours. One participant told me, “I didn’t think about anything else for three hours.” This compliment was one of the best I could receive as a teacher. I had created an experience where people could let go of their busy lives and connect with their creative selves.
More Than Techniques: Sparking Confidence
My art workshops aren’t just about teaching techniques or producing a one-off piece of art. Instead, I aim to give people the confidence to explore their own creative paths and support them in continuing that journey after the workshop is over. Before we begin, I always share my philosophy about creativity and reinforce this throughout the workshop. We’re all capable of learning; however, the key is kindness toward ourselves. Mistakes happen, and it might take several tries to get it right, but that’s part of the process. Trusting that we’ll never know it all is actually quite freeing—there’s always room to grow.
Creativity is for Everyone
Moreover, I don’t believe creativity is exclusive to an elite few; it’s within all of us. As a teacher, I take time to acknowledge the vulnerability of learning something new, especially as adults. Being kind to ourselves allows for a much deeper learning experience. Letting go of control and embracing the learning process can be scary, but the reward is high. I’m honoured to guide people through this journey.
Unique Perspectives Fuel Art
I never worry about students copying my work or taking my spot in the creative world—because, hello, there is room for everyone! We all see the world in our unique ways, and this perspective is reflected in what we create. When we tap into that deep, authentic place, the energy shines through. The idea that I might inspire someone to keep creating fills me with joy. This is why creativity is meant to be shared and why I love teaching art workshops.
