Previously we provided reusable metal rings for binding, however through our ongoing research into more planet-friendly ways we can run this business we have decided to ditch the metal rings because of the energy required to make them – first the minerals need to be mined, shipped overseas, mixed with a bunch of other minerals, melted down and manufactured into rings, then shipped to Australia where we had to test each one because about half of the rings per pack weren’t usable.
We have gone with recycled cotton twine which is made from dead-stock textile waste in a family factory near Barcelona. The textile waste is broken down back into combed cotton fibre, colours are blended and respun into new thread – there is no dyeing involved in this process. This product is made overseas so does need to take a trip to get to Australia – however at this stage there are no recycled cotton twine manufacturers in Aus. Eventually we’re looking forward to creating our own recycled twine from textile waste in Australia.
You have the simple task of taking a moment once a month to flip the page and easily rethread the twine. Alternatively you could hang the calendar from 2 picture hooks. We’ll do a blog post on the different ways you can hang the calendar too! You can also use your reusable metal rings from previous calendars.
