Artworks for the earth – the creative process

Lessons from the Earth: A new collection of artworks for the earth, as an offering and a reflection.

Creativity is innate to us all. Human beings have always expressed life, love, and loss through art. Yet, in today’s world, I feel we’ve drifted from that innate creativity, leading us to a disconnect from ourselves and the earth. This disconnect has contributed to many of the challenges we now face. In my life, I reconnect with my creative self not only through art but also by gardening, dancing, and approaching everything with curiosity, be it relationships, self-growth, or care for our planet. When it comes time to create a new body of work my inspiration is always the earth, and what I create is like an offering of artworks for the earth as I grapple with the grief and gratitude I feel for the world in this life.

Each year, I set aside time to create new artworks for my calendar—a collection that gives me space to explore fresh ideas and techniques. It’s more than just creating something functional; it’s a deeply creative process I cherish, something for my own creative spirit.

This year’s collection might just be my favourite yet! Two years ago, Steve and I collaborated on Vows to the Earth, combining his poetry with my artwork. This year, we’re doing it again with Lessons from the Earth. Inspired by the deep listening, cooperation, and learning we see in nature, this new series is our attempt to capture that magic through words and art.

The artworks draw from the mirrored compositions found in traditional folk art and the nature-inspired motifs of Rithika Merchant. You’ll find these influences in each piece, with patterns and colours that aim to evoke a sense of harmony and reverence for the natural world.

You’re Invited!

Come experience Lessons from the Earth in person at Rosey Ravelston Book Shop in Lawson, Blue Mountains, from November 6th to December 2nd. The originals will be framed and displayed in the bookshop’s lower space, where you can enjoy a coffee and cake while viewing the artworks and reading the accompanying poetry.

Join us for the opening event on November 9th, where we’ll have food, drinks, poetry readings, music, an info session from Rising Tide, and a collaborative session to create protest banners.

I’d love to see you there and hear your thoughts on this collection! Follow along on Instagram to catch behind-the-scenes process videos as well.
